Alarms & Warnings

At a minimum, visual alarms must be provided in restrooms, general usage areas (e. g., meeting rooms), hallways, lobbies, and areas for common use. Visual alarms are to be integrated into the building or facility alarm system. If audible alarms are provided, then a visual alarm must be provided. Visual alarms should be placed 80 inches above the highest floor level within the space, or 6 inches below the ceiling, whichever is lower. In rooms, common corridors, or hallways required to have a visual alarm, the alarm is to be positioned so that no location in the space is more than 50 feet from the signal. In large rooms and spaces that are more than 100 feet across that do not have obstructions 6 feet above the floor, alarms may be placed around the perimeter, spaced a maximum 100 feet apart.
