Entrances

Accessible building entrances should be either visible from an accessible parking space or clearly marked with the appropriate signage at passenger-loading zones. The International Symbol of Accessibility should be displayed at accessible entrances. Primary entrances must be unlocked or a provision made for a signaling device if the entrance must be locked during certain hours.

The entrance should provide at least 32 inches of clearance in order to enable a person using a wheelchair, scooter, or crutches to maneuver. Exterior entrances and interior doors should be operable with reasonable force. Fire doors require a minimum of 15 pounds of force to open. Handles on accessible doors should be able to be easily grasped with one hand and not require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist to operate. Hardware required for accessible door passages should be mounted no higher than 48 inches from the floor surface.
