Offices & Classrooms

All public spaces must be accessible. This includes offices, meeting rooms, classrooms, laboratories, bookstores, and libraries. Accessible rooms and spaces are to be centrally located in the facility to prevent unnecessarily long travel for persons with mobility or visual impairments.

Counter heights in spaces such as business offices and libraries should have a maximum height of 36 inches to allow access to persons in wheelchairs. These spaces should not be blocked by walls, tables, etc.

Staff offices should allow clear maneuverability for persons using wheelchairs. Floors should be non-slip, level, and negotiable by persons in wheelchairs or with other mobility aids. Classrooms should have the space necessary for persons using wheelchairs to be dispersed throughout the classroom within easy viewing of the presentation or activity.

A plan for physically accommodating students with a disability in classrooms that are regularly full should be developed. This plan should consider that the aisle space between tables should be at least 36 inches wide. Spaces for wheelchair access at tables should be at least 30 inches wide. Tables must have a clear opening for knee spaces of at least 27 inches in height, 30 inches in width, and 19 inches in depth. The top surface of the table should be 28 to 34 inches from the floor.
