Public Restrooms

Accessible restrooms for each gender should be identified with an International Symbol of Accessibility sign. The signs should be mounted no more than 60 inches above the floor to the centerline of the sign with raised characters, including Braille, on the latch side of the door. Entrances should have a clear opening of 32 inches.

There should be sufficient clear floor space surrounding the lavatories to allow for a forward approach. The hot water and drainpipes under the lavatory should have insulation or other protective covering. The water fixtures should be lever-style or operable by one hand. The bathroom dispensers and accessories should be mounted so that the highest control or operable part is no more than 48 inches high. Dispensers that can be reached from a parallel/side approach should be mounted so that the highest operable control is no more than 54 inches high.

The bathrooms should be equipped with a grab bar in at least one designated stall. The flush controls should be accessible and operable with one hand or a hands-free operation.
