Telephones

If public phones are provided, at least one must be accessible with a phone dial and coin receiver no higher than 48 inches for forward approach and 54 inches for parallel approach. At least 25% of the total number of available phones, but never less than one, should be available with amplification. A sign containing a depiction of a telephone handset with radiating sound waves should be used to identify telephones with volume control. If there are 4 or more public telephones, at least 1 must be a public text telephone. Text telephones (TTYs) must be identified by the international TTY symbol. In addition, if a facility has a public text telephone, signs indicating the location of the nearest TTY should be placed adjacent to all banks of telephones that do not contain a TTY. If a facility has no banks of telephones, a sign indicating the location of the nearest TTY must be provided at the entrances (e. g., in a building directory).
