Characteristics of LD

Typical Accommodations

Typical accommodations for students with learning disabilites may include: 

  • Seat location
  • Note taker, tape recorder, and/or laptop computer
  • Copies of classmate's and/or instructor's notes or overheads
  • Extended test time (Time and a half)
  • Alternate location for a test
  • Memory aids such as a calculator, thesaurus, spell checker, formula cards, and/or scribe during tests
  • Directions and deadlines given both orally and in writing
  • Visual aids when possible
  • Provisions of written lecture outlines or notes on the board
  • Use of a word processor to take a test
  • Frequent breaks allowed during tests
  • Test given by page or by section
  • Clear arrangement of test items on paper
  • Use of blank card or paper to assist in reading
  • Extended time to complete assignments
  • Taped texts and classroom materials
  • Use of handouts and visual aids
  • Extended time for in class assignments to correct spelling, punctuation, and/or grammar
  • Word processor with spell check and/or voice output to provide auditory feedback
  • Concise oral instructions
  • Syllabus provided before the start of the semester
