Accommodations

Typical accommodations for students with motor impairments may include: 

  • Relocation of the class to a more accessible location
  • Provision of classroom space for a wheelchair or a wheelchair accessible desk/table
  • Advanced notice if the class activity will be held elsewhere
  • Reduction of the writing load thorough the use of handouts, supplementary texts, etc.
  • Use of notetakers such as tape recorders, laptop computers, or copies of peer notes
  • Reasonable consideration for lateness due to difficulties in the location of classroom or schedule
  • Test accommodations: extended time, separate place, scribe, access to word processors
  • Use of a computer for written work
  • Special computer equipment/software: voice activated word processing, word prediction keyboard modification
  • Adjustable lab tables or drafting tables for classes taught in lab settings
  • Lab assistance
  • Accessible parking in close proximity to the building
  • Activities that allow the student to participate within his/her physical capabilities and still meet the objectives of the course
  • Course waiver or substitutions for certain students
  • Taped texts
  • Oral or taped test responses
  • Provision of instructor's notes when appropriate and copies of overheads when possible to reduce the need for writing
  • Advance planning for field trips to ensure accessibility
