Quick Link-Pen Elite (Reading Pen)
Provides the definition of a scanned word or phrase using synthesized speech.  Slide the pen over a printed word and hear it spoken or hear its definition.  Contains the American Heritage Dictionary 3rd Edition.  The Reading Pen has a built-in loud speaker & earphone jack that enables external & private listening.  Informational website:  http://www.independentliving.com

Variable Speed Cassette Players
Audio book player.  Plays specialized audiocassette tapes recorded on four tracks that maximizes the amount of tape space used.  This type of recording is frequently used to record books and other reading materials available through state and national loan programs (example Library of Congress tapes) for the disabled.  Most of these variable speed cassette players will play two speeds:  15/16 and 1-7/8 ips, and features a built-in speaker, variable speed control, tone control, cue and review.  Informational websites:

Four-Track Cassette Player/Recorder
These devices feature the specialized four-track playback of the variable speed cassette players along with audio record features.  These extra features enable a user to dictate/play back notes into the same equipment they used for track audio materials.  Some models also play.record stero, include an AM/FM radio tuner and digital pitch control.  Informational websites:

Scanning and Reading Software -- Low Vision
Software programs that make printed or electronic text accessible to people who are blind or have limited vision.  These programs use optical character recognition (OCR) scanning to convert printed text to digital text.  A computer is then used to "read" the text using text to speech technology.  They can also be used to read aloud ebooks and other digital files.  Informational websites:

Scanning and Reading Machines
Stand-alone reading machines incorporate a scanner, speech synthesizer, and other electronics in a single unit.  They are used to convert printed material into an electronic data format that is read aloud by a speech synthesizer.
